FAQs - About Us

  • Brown Editing was created because it is nearly impossible to feel confident in your application if you don't feel heard or seen by your editor.

Confidence is key to writing a successful application.

But unfortunately, many students with diverse stories are told by milquetoast professional application editors and big name test-prep companies to dilute their narratives. This often comes at the detriment of their self esteem, and their application success.

    At Brown Editing, we're different.

Here, we empower our clientele through storytelling.

Masterful and precise storytelling results in positive application outcomes.

    ------------------------------------------

Brown Editing LLC was founded in 2020, about four years after Allison Brown started editing her friends’ and families’ essays. She began editing in college as Co-President of Students of Color in Public Policy. There, she edited students essays to secure their admission to the Ford School at the University of Michigan, the #1 undergraduate program in Public Policy in the country.

But when Allison graduated from the University of Michigan’s Ford School of Public Policy, she found an absence of Black and POC writers and editors in the graduate school application space. Further, those who were Black/POC were charging exorbitant rates - up to $750 an hour for a consultation.

As a result, Allison found the market for proofreading and editing categorically too expensive, dubious, and impersonal.

She felt most law school creators/editors were either 1) too sterile/”traditional” or 2) not welcoming to radical praxis. So, she started Brown Editing LLC in an effort to change that reality.

Brown Editing's mission is to provide everyone an opportunity to write convincing and creative narratives to elevate their applications.

Brown Editing’s clientele is primarily people of color, Black folks, the LGBTQIA+ community, underresourced folks, and various intersections of the aforementioned communities.

    But we don’t discriminate!

We are in the business of providing low-cost and high-quality editing services to all of our clients.

  • Allison Brown is the editor-in-chief of Brown Editing LLC.

Allison is a public intellectual. She is a descendant of African enslaved folks on both sides of her family, and the oldest daughter of 3 children. She is a Black woman from PG County, Maryland, who lives her life to the tune of the Malcolm X quote: “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.”

Allison graduated from the University of Michigan’s Ford School of Public Policy in May of 2019. Allison was selected as a summer associate at Norton Rose Fulbright, the second largest law firm in the US, in the New York City office for two summers straight.

Prior to law school, Allison worked for Venable LLP in Washington D.C. as a practice group assistant/paralegal. In college, Allison held internships at the US Embassy of Australia and the US Department of Transportation. Allison Brown also worked many service sector jobs throughout college, from places like Home Depot to Victoria’s Secret.

Allison has written over 10 articles and Op-Eds, published in various papers, academic journals, and news outlets. In college, she was the most-read columnist of the Michigan Daily for several seasons from 2017-2019, and she has been interviewed by Glamour magazine on race, relationships, and class.

Allison attended Georgetown University Law Center (ranked #15 US News and World Report) for her third year of law school, after transferring from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law (ranked #16 US News and World Report upon her matriculation in August of 2021.)

She graduated with her J.D. in May of 2024.

  • No.

Allison Brown is the sole editor at Brown Editing. Here, unlike at other editing firms, you can rest assured that you know exactly who you are working with, and her qualifications. Allison has decided not to hire other editors at this time to maintain quality control.

Further, because we are in the business of editing people's resumes, cover letters, and applications to college/graduate school, we have the power to change people's lives.

When folks come to Brown Editing, they are trusting us with their futures.

We do not take this responsibility lightly. We understand and value the effort, time, and intention required to produce high quality work product.

  • You should choose Brown Editing because Allison is actively invested in the success of her clients. She doesn't do this for the money - she does it because she wants to help others.

(If she did this for the money, Brown Editing's prices would be much higher.)

    From Allison herself:

“I’m a person who knows the power of a story. Storytelling got me into the doors of my first BigLaw firm. Storytelling saved my law school career after a racist dean tried to get me expelled. Storytelling has taken my clients to different continents and to schools they never thought they would get into. Storytelling is an art. And storytelling is the magic behind Brown Editing LLC’s success.

Stories make us human. They unite us. And they have the power to change lives. How you decide to tell your story has all the power in the world. You are the artist, presenting your story to the world. Wouldn’t you want someone who understands that to help you craft your narrative?

Over the past three years, I’ve helped my friends and family obtain over $2,000,000 in scholarships, grants, and professional opportunities - all for around than the cost of a 26” virgin hair wig.

I continue editing and proofreading because I know I have a skill and the power to help people. I enjoy positively changing people’s lives.

I hope to be able to help you as well.”
